BOSTON (AP) — Kyle Isbel hit a liner that crashed through a red light near the base of the Green Monster at Fenway Park and lodged inside the broken light for a ground-rule double on Wednesday night. The Kansas City Royals had just taken a 1-0 lead on MJ Melendez’s home run to open the second inning. With two outs and Matt Duffy on first base, Isbel lashed a drive to left field that looked like it would be caught by Boston’s Masataka Yoshida, who lunged for the ball and clasped his glove. But Yoshida missed the ball. The sound of the ball hitting the Green Monster was clearly heard around the park. Yoshida, who crashed into the base of the wall in his futile catch effort, got up and started to run in, attempting to field the ball. Clearly befuddled, Yoshida turned around a couple of times trying to locate the ball. But the ball was not on the field.Rather than hitting the wall and bouncing off, the ball crashed through one of the red lights that denote the number of outs. Yoshida reac...

Family upset about World Scout Jamboree after 14-year-old son became ill It's no secret that teachers, especially here in Colorado, are not paid well. Some folks living in the county where these questions are being raised want the schools to look for other funding methods."The language says, 'Shall your taxes be raised?' I don't think it has a really good shot of passing," said FOX31 political analyst Michael Fields, a Republican strategist. "Which I think instead of taking all this time as a district to talk about how to increase taxes at the worst possible time, they should be focusing in on: How do you make sure kids ...

Beware the beguiling Doctor Chatbot

Tom Melvin is an associate professor in Medical Device Regulatory Affairs in the School of Medicine, Trinity College Dublin. Many of us have engaged with chatbots, the computerized conversational programs meant to help with things like our banking or a utility company query. The recent introduction of large language models (LLMs) has turbocharged these bots and their abilities, as neural network language models can now use patterns of speech from vast numbers of sources to generate human-like interactive conversations.  The use of chatbots in medicine, specifically, has a much longer history than one might think. In 1966, Joseph Weizenbaum at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology developed the ELIZA program, which used natural language processing to mimic a psychotherapist by offering questions or reflections based on text input from a “patient.”As one might imagine, given the early stages of computer programming, this was a simple program. However, for some of those who use...
